Kbal Spean is called "a spectacularly carved riverbed, set deep while in the jungle into the northeast of Angkor".[4] The river in excess of which the bridge head exists is also referred to as Stung Kbal Spean, a tributary on the Siem Enjoy River that rises within the Kulein mountains north of Banteay Srei. The river bed cuts by sandstone formation
